Shutdown and Abort Shutdown in Windows using DOS

There are times we need to leave our machines up and running for some colleagues to use them (e.g., to test a web application). But leaving them for the whole night might be a bad idea. Some companies have policies on power usage  particularly for non-production servers and may require you to shutdown your machine when you leave for home.

You could have them running for a few hours more after you leave using the DOS shutdown command.

 The command above, if issued, will initiate system shutdown in  3 hours. The -f forces the shutdown.

To abort the shutdown, invoke the following command.
